Communicating with a Memory Impaired Person

how-to-communicate-with-loved-one

Today’s Caring Minute is about communicating with a memory impaired person.

Are you caring for an elderly family member who suffers from dementia? It’s sometimes very hard to communicate with that person and can contribute to the stress the caregiver is already feeling. Here are some tips to help with better communication. Identify yourself and address the person by name. Use short, simple, familiar words and sentences. Always speak slowly and clearly and patiently wait for a response. Give one-step directions and only ask one question at a time. Repeat information or questions and if necessary give visual clues such as pointing, gesturing and touch. Avoid literal expressions such as” hop-in the car”. Be aware of your own tone of voice and body language. Use a gentle, relaxed tone; a lower voice pitch is more calming. Try to convey an easy-going, non-demanding manner of speaking. Be aware of your feelings and attitude-they are often communicated unintentionally through your voice. Approach the person from the front and avoid any sudden movements.
