Today’s Caring Minute is about keeping your memory sharp.
Everyone has memory lapses from time to time, and as you grow older, these slip-ups may become more frequent and common. So how can you keep your memory sharp?
- Step it up! A 30-minute daily walk is one of the best things you can do for your body and brain.
- A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and fish , rather than red meats, can be very healthy in many ways.
- Engage in mentally challenging activities. Play cards, join a book club, or play a brain training app on your phone or computer.
- Stay social! The more social connections someone has, the better they are at preserving mental function and memory. These interactions also boost your mood.
- Get a good night’s sleep. Attention and concentration are down when sleep is restless.
- Stop the stress! High levels of the stress hormone cortisol make it harder to pull out information from your brain’s memory. Use memory tricks. Post sticky notes around the house or office or set reminders on the phone so you’ll know when to take your medicines.
