Managing the Daily Routine Simplify-Structure-Supervise

SIMPLIFY ACTIVITIES

  1. Reduce the number of choices.
  2. Respect the person’s likes and dislikes.
  3. Encourage the person to continue self-care as long as possible but be realistic about ability.
  4. Make sure the person’s wardrobe suits his or her needs.
  5. Reduce and simplify grooming tasks.
  6. Plan menus for a week or two at a time.
  7. Encourage the impaired person to help with household tasks when possible.

STRUCTURE ACTIVITIES

  1. Observe your days.
  2. Collect your notes and analyze them; look for patterns in the day.
  3. Set up a schedule.
  4. Plan ahead how you will handle those events which occur fairly often but not daily (i.e. Doctor appointments)
  5. Keep a backup plan in case the planned activity doesn’t work out right.
  6. Keep a written list of simple diversions you can use if you need to distract the impaired person.

SUPERVISING ACTIVITIES

  1. Be prepared to supervise even very personal activities.
  2. Be prepared to ban most dangerous activities (i.e. driving).
  3. Be prepared to have the impaired person resist your efforts.
  4. Be prepared to seek help in supervising the person’s activities, around the clock if need be.
